From Osman to Bayezid: Deciphering Early Ottoman History
Peter Douglas Rehm
Abstract
This paper provides for its readers a brief synopsis of Ottoman history ranging from roughly 1300 to 1413. The two primary issues confronted were historiography and the origins of the first Ottomans. Early Ottoman history lacks a concise understanding of the events which led to the creation of Osman's beylik. This paper seeks to provide a suggestion for a new conceptualization of the first Ottomans. After the victory of Mehmed over his rivals in 1413, did the Ottoman Empire truly begin to gain the features commonly associated with it today.
